The Extraordinary and Mysterious Pueblo Bonito Construction Sequence,
Chaco Canyon National Historic Monument,
New Mexico, USA

This page shows a possible construction sequence of the ancient Anasazi Indian village called Pueblo Bonito, based upon fairly hard archaeological data. You may need to let the movie loop several times to form your own impressions of this information.

As an architect I find several strange and curious things about this archaeological model including:
A) In Stage IV, an earlier (curvalinear) Stage IB is completely torn down and rebuilt in a rectilinear structure.
B) At about the time the central Great Kiva of StageVII is built, an earlier Great Kiva built in Stage III is abandoned and filled in to become part of the west plaza.
Also other smaller kivas were abandoned and filled at various stages the Pueblo's evolution.

Source of data for this model: Great Pueblo Architecture of Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, by Stephen H. Lekson, 1987, University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque.
