Tsiping is located on a volcanic "tuff" mesa about 45 miles north
of Santa Fe near to Abiquiu. The site shown here is about 800 feet above
thesurrounding valley floor. The village was built with cut and shaped volcanic
"tuffa" stones.
Tree rings samples and ceramics indicate occupation from 1200AD to 1325AD.
The village contains 335 rooms, 16 kivas, a linear (street-like) central
plaza, and walled enclosure to the north.
The village overall dimensions are 675 feet long by 140 feet wide.
The plan suggests only a loose aggregational concept rather than the predetermined
plans of other villages (such as those at Chaco Canyon) suggesting Walpi
(Hopi village on First mesa) built several centuries later.
